Short answer
Where does Hawthorn news break first?
The official news index at playhawthorn.com. Development updates and playtest announcements appear there first; Steam announcements mirror the major ones. For anything that affects a build you can play, cross-check both — and for playtest eligibility, the Kickstarter and Ko-Fi tier definitions are authoritative.
The canonical feed. Development updates, playtest announcements and charity posts all land here first.
Store-page update history and community announcements. Best for anything that affects the build you can download.
Where the team pulls bug reports and feedback during playtests, and where it asks which topics to deep-dive next.
Email updates and playtest invitations. Join the village to be invited to future playtests.
Funding updates and backer-tier news. This is also where playtest eligibility is defined.
Five post types account for essentially everything the studio publishes. Knowing which one you are reading tells you how much weight to give it.
A long-form post covering months of work. These are the single most important posts for understanding where the game actually is.

Example: Village Council Playtest Begins

The team branched off from the Proof-of-Concept build late in the previous year and rebuilt the foundations: an expandable map, new dialogue, quest and storyteller systems, crops that need watering, assignable NPC jobs, villager Happiness / Morale / Affinity stats, a conversation journal, improved housing interiors, wall decor, controller support, private co-op sessions and a new save system.
The third and widest playtest phase opened to Legends, Stewards, Homesteaders and equivalent supporters, closing the three-week August window.

NEARstudios formalised a three-phase playtest structure — Draft, Preview and Proof — modelled on editing a storybook. The team said the same process may be reused for Early Access updates if it works.

We do not republish official posts. This site summarises them, links to the original, and — more usefully — translates them into what changes for a player. Three rules govern that:
