Guide
A practical first-hour route for the current playtest build: establish a small base, test the systems that are published, and keep any unconfirmed steps clearly marked.

Short answer
What should I do first in Hawthorn?
Create your character, walk the village, then test job assignment before you invest heavily in construction. Crops need water to grow and NPC farmers can handle watering, so start with a small plot and confirm the loop in your build. After that, add storage, housing and decor in small steps.
Talk to every villager you meet — conversations are tracked in a journal and Affinity with each NPC unlocks dialogue and friendship events. That is the slowest system to build, so it should start on day one.
This is a useful early test because it changes who can handle routine work. In the current build you can assign NPCs jobs instead of jobs being hard-coded, and NPC farmers will water your crops.
The catch: not every NPC will enjoy doing every job. So the early move is not “assign whoever is closest” — it is “find who actually wants to farm”. That is also why talking to villagers early matters: you are gathering the information you need to staff the village properly.

Materials limit what you can build in the current slice, and decor is not only cosmetic, because villagers care about the furniture and decor in their home and are happier when they have what they want. That pushes decor earlier than you might expect.

Crops now need to be watered to grow. This is a small rule with an outsized effect on how a session feels: if watering is manual and you plant too much, every in-game morning becomes a chore run.
The two ways to avoid it:
Because seasons bring rain and snow, watering pressure will also change across the year. See Seasons & Weather.
Hawthorn’s social layer is slower than its building layer, so it rewards starting early. Three confirmed pieces make it worth your time:
There is also NPC banter: villagers chatter with each other about what is happening, including the weather. It is flavour, but it is also a cheap way to notice that something in the world has changed.
New players lose hours to systems that do not pay off yet. On your first session, skip:
