Guide
Village building is the most developed pillar in Hawthorn — it was the focus of the Proof-of-Concept Demo and the system the studio has iterated on most. Here is what is confirmed, and how to build around it.

Short answer
How does village building work in Hawthorn?
You rebuild and decorate homes among the roots of great trees in Windermere. The current build lets you see inside homes from outside and watch the weather from within, supports hanging items on walls, and — most importantly — makes villagers care about the furniture and decor in their home.
That last point is the one that changes how you build: decor is a villager happiness lever, not a reward for finishing.
The official description places your village on the shore of a lake in Windermere, and the Summer 2026 build expanded the town layout. Because resource placement is procedural and reacts to world events, the “best” site is less about fixed node distances than about three things you control:
Homes are the unit of the village: every villager you recruit needs one, and villager happiness runs through what is inside them. Player and NPC homes were both updated in the Summer 2026 build.
Practical implications:
In most village sims decor is an endgame luxury. In Hawthorn it is wired into the villager simulation: NPCs now care about the furniture and decor in their home and are happier if they have what they want.
Combined with wall hanging through the building system, that means:
The studio has also sketched decorating goals publicly without publishing the catalogue, so expect the furniture set to keep expanding.
Resources are dragged with a rope, and dragging was improved in the Winter 2025/2026 build. It is a small mechanic with an outsized effect on whether a layout feels good.
If you are playing co-op, this order is the Builder’s responsibility — see Co-op Roles. If you are solo, steps 3 and 4 are what villagers exist to absorb.
Building is well documented at the level of feel and completely undocumented at the level of numbers. Specifically, NEARstudios has not published:
When those are published they will land on the Items database and the development log.
