There is a free public demo — but it is a prototype of an older build, not a slice of the current game. Here is exactly what you get, and how to get into the newer build.

Short answer
Is there a Hawthorn demo?
Yes. A Hawthorn Proof-of-Concept Demo is free to download from the Steam store page. It is a prototype built at the very start of development that focuses on village building, and NEARstudios states its visuals do not represent the final game.
It is not the current build. If you want the version with the new map, quests, villager stats and private co-op, that is the Village Council playtest, which requires a supporter tier that includes a Steam key.
A Steam account is required. There is no key, no sign-up form and no playtest application for this build.
The studio’s own description narrows the demo to one pillar: village building. Everything else is present only as atmosphere or scaffolding. Concretely, that means:
Systems that arrived after this build — the quest system, storyteller, assignable NPC jobs, villager Happiness/Morale/Affinity, the conversation journal, private co-op sessions and the new flight system — are not in the demo. See what changed since.
Two different builds, two different purposes. This is the comparison people usually want when they ask “how do I play Hawthorn?”

Because the demo is a mid-game slice with little onboarding, going in with a plan helps more than it would in a normal tutorial:

During the August 2026 Village Council playtest, NEARstudios reported a rare save-file corruption issue and asked affected players to send both their current save and their last known-good save. The team had already increased the number of save files kept per character so total progress loss was unlikely.
That notice applies to the playtest build, not the public demo, but it is worth knowing if you move between the two. The demo itself received a bug-fix and improvement pass on 29 May 2026.
